NewSchool’s 33rd Annual Commencement Ceremony

RICHARD LOUV AND ROGER SHOWLEY NAMED HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS BY NEWSCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT RICHARD LOUV WILL DELIVER COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS AT THE UNIVERSITY’S 33RD COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY ON SATURDAY, JUNE 23RD AT COPLEY SYMPHONY HALL, JACOBS MUSIC CENTER

SAN DIEGO, CA – Journalist and author, Richard Louv, and journalist Roger Showley, will receive honorary degrees at NewSchool of Architecture & Design’s 33rd commencement exercises on Saturday, June 23 in San Diego, CA. Richard Louv will also deliver the commencement address to graduates.

President and Chief Academic Officer Marvin J. Malecha, FAIA, DPACSA, will preside over the ceremony, which will take place at the legendary Copley Symphony Hall, Jacobs Music Center. Dispensing with the formalities and extended speeches, Richard Louv will also deliver an impactful talk to equip NewSchool’s graduating class with knowledge for their future endeavors.

“NewSchool is thrilled to honor Richard Louv and Roger Showley — inspirational writers who have addressed social issues by, exploring the relationship of humanity and the built environment as well as humanity’s changing relationship with nature,” said Malecha.

The honorees are:

Richard Louv

Richard Louv is a journalist and author of nine books, including Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder, The Nature Principle: Reconnecting with Life in a Virtual Age, and most recently Vitamin N: The Essential Guide to a Nature-Rich Life: 500 Ways to Enrich Your Family’s Health & Happiness. His books have been translated into 13 languages and published in 17 countries and helped launch an international movement to connect children and their families to nature.

He is co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Children & Nature Network, an organization helping build the international movement to connect people and communities to the natural world. With artist Robert Bateman, he serves as honorary co-chair of Canada’s Child in Nature Alliance.

As a journalist and commentator, he has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Times of London, Orion, Outside and other newspapers and magazines. He was a columnist for The San Diego Union-Tribune and Parents magazine.

Roger Showley

Roger Showley retired after 44 years from the Union-Tribune in March 2018. He most recently covered growth and development, encompassing commercial real estate, planning, design, historic preservation, downtown and suburban trends, and San Diego history. A third-generation San Diegan and graduate of UC San Diego, he also has written three books on San Diego history.
