SoundUnited

SoundUnited

Project Description

NewSchool product design students worked with SoundUnited, a group that creates top quality audio equipment, to develop a new product line. SoundUnited challenged our students to envision products that would serve “the future of sound.” The purpose was not only to design a beautiful piece of audio equipment but also to potentially challenge how we currently use sound equipment. Students visited a sound research lab and had multiple conversations with the SoundUnited team to identify themes to explore.

Swenyo

Project Description

Swenyo, a lifestyle brand designing products for young adults, challenged our product design students to create storage solutions for college students. With the limitations of dorm-living in mind, students were asked to explore three typologies: large wall storage, small wall storage, and desk storage. The students conducted research online and interviewed students from two different campuses to determine a theme to pursue for their final projects.

VisualSpeakers

Project Description

VisualSpeakers, a 2016 IDEA Featured Finalist designed by product design student Marcelo Kertesz, is a wireless speaker system with an integrated projector dedicated to images that complement the music experience. With a “Dome Mode,” where images are projected into the VisualSpeakers integrated 12-inch dome, and a “Party Mode,” where images are projected in the ambient (ceiling, furniture, and walls), VisualSpeakers provide different kinds of images to enhance your sound experience.

Scenic Delta – Research and Education Center

Project Description

This project aims at redeveloping the North Mission Bay area, for both marsh restoration and community engagement. The marsh is currently isolated from the community. It is important to provide a chance to connect human and nature to raise awareness and understanding of the marsh. For the marsh to recover, the current approach aims at containing the marsh, returning the natural habitat at the same time giving people the freedom for different types of activities. Although human activities and comfort are essential, a place of nature in the city should be ensured. We are proposing a UCSD Research and Education Center to continue preserving the Marsh and also teaching the community of its importance to our environment.

Water Purification Park

Project Description

Adjacent to the Kendall Frost Marsh Preserve in San Diego’s Mission Bay, the Water Purification Park serves as a public park with a wetlands research center and natural water purification system. Our main focus was to preserve and restore the remaining salt marsh by cleaning water runoff that is contaminating Mission Bay. Working alongside professionals in the field, we came up with a functional yet eloquent water purification system that blends with the research facility and overall experience. By doing so, we found a great opportunity to further educate and inspire visitors to learn about the environment and its importance.

Wine Bar & Wine Store

Project Description

In a space with an area measuring around 2,500 square feet, this project included a wine bar, lounge, wine store, and spaces needed to run the business. Besides the space being practical, the interiors had to be warm, inviting, and elegant.

The lighting design was an essential part of the project. To add elegance, warmth, and visual interest, different types of light fixtures were placed. Elegant crystal chandeliers illuminate the important features of each space. Graceful wall sconces add light where needed, and linear light fixtures add a touch of contemporary style to a primarily traditional space. The thought is that the space planning and design choices create a space that would work perfectly for the client and customers.

This project won 1st Place in the Student Commercial category at the ASID 2020 Design Excellence Awards. Click here to learn more!

A Residential Farm Tower

Project Description

With population growth, food production in the United States is reaching maximum capacity. Current trends in development create a struggle between farming and living. These two practices are modeled for their own benefit and are soon to clash in a disastrous agglomeration. The 30,000 plus residents of San Diego’s central urban context consume 21,231,000 pounds of produce each year. A new type of residential tower needs to come forth. Utilizing vertical farming, a new model of urban living can be tested in a dense community.

The residential farm tower located in a vertical community of tourist resources and developer condominiums will provide fresh produce daily to celebrate a direct injection of local goods from farm to market. It proposes a new level of social interface and engagement of the community. Let’s live, share, and grow within our city.
