NewSchool Student Wins ADDY Award at the 2015 San Diego American Advertising Awards

NewSchool of Architecture & Design senior Armando Roman has received an ADDY Award presented by SDX, formerly the San Diego Ad Club, at the local American Advertising Awards Gala held earlier this month in San Diego. Roman was awarded a Bronze ADDY in the student Elements of Advertising category for a logo he created as part of a branding and integrated advertising campaign project for an upscale East Village sushi restaurant, The Parlour.

“I submitted the branding and integrated ad campaign to SDX with the encouragement of NewSchool faculty,” said Roman, who studies in the Media Design School of Digital Arts at NewSchool. “It was an exciting experience to attend the gala from a student standpoint, having the chance to see other local student projects as well as professional campaigns and trends in the industry. We were told that judging was very tough this year, so the fact that I won a bronze award is quite an honor.”

Roman created his branding — which included the award-winning logo, mock-up of a billboard, t-shirt design, business cards, magazine ads and direct mailers for the local Japanese eatery — as part of NewSchool’s Comp Studio II class under the guidance of Linda Sellheim and Lead Graphic Design Instructor, Chris Clark. As a result, The Parlour now has plans to use the new branding materials later this year.

“An ADDY is a very prestigious award and to win one is quite an honor,” said Clark. “This is a great success for Armando and indicative of NewSchool students’ potential going forward.”

The American Advertising Awards program is hosted by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), a national advertising trade organization comprising a membership of more than 200 local advertising clubs, including SDX.

“For over 100 years SDX has been a hub for the creative community, representing the best in San Diego advertising. Hosting the San Diego American Advertising Awards is a great way to showcase the awesome creative talent working in this town, and puts our best work in the national spotlight,” said Michael Warburton, Brand Manager for San Diego Zoo Global and current SDX president, in an SDX-issued press release.
