Where Curiosity Meets Innovation, and Strategy

Design shapes the world around you—everything from the bus stops you wait at to the apps on your phone. Do you have the curiosity, passion, and drive to explore the ‘why’ behind everything? Then you are a designer.

When Challenge Leads to Impact

Design is more than making things look good. Your work will be about solving real problems—improving a product, creating an app, or designing a space that feels alive.

Design is a team sport. You’ll collaborate constantly, learning to understand perspectives beyond your own. You’ll thrive when you’re willing to challenge assumptions, take risks, and grow fast. Every decision you make matters, and the challenges you face in learning and creating are exactly what give your work impact.

Curiosity as Your Compass

Curiosity is your guide. You’ll explore in all directions—collecting information, analyzing trends, and discovering new ways to approach challenges. Curiosity turns into dedication when you commit to learning deeply, experimenting fearlessly, and refining your instincts.

Every day is a chance to discover something new. This field is constantly evolving, and if you embrace change, you’ll develop a mindset that lets you pivot across multiple avenues whether that’s product design, interactive media, or graphic design. You’ll never get bored because every day brings something unexpected to learn.

Innovation Drives Possibility

Curiosity helps you explore, but innovation is what turns your ideas into something new and meaningful. In design, you’ll learn to look at problems from fresh perspectives, combine different insights, and push beyond what’s expected. Innovation isn’t just about creating the next big thing, it’s about improving experiences, rethinking everyday objects, and finding solutions that truly make a difference. The more you experiment and embrace bold ideas, the more impact you can have as a designer.

Strategy Shapes Your Path

Curiosity drives exploration, but strategy gives your work direction. Thinking of yourself as a business—defining who you are, what you offer, and how you present yourself, helps you turn ideas into impact. Even small exercises, like reflecting on your personal goals or your professional statements, give clarity and purpose to your design journey.

Strategy isn’t about limiting creativity; it’s about giving it focus. When you approach challenges strategically, your work doesn’t just solve problems—it tells a story, builds your identity, and positions you to make an impact in the world.

Are You Ready?

If you love asking questions, exploring possibilities, and creating solutions that matter, this path could be for you. You’ll need curiosity, innovation, and strategic thinking to succeed, but in return, you’ll gain the ability to shape the world around you.

NewSchool Dean of Architecture to Speak at UCSD on Jan 28

San Diego, CA — Innovation is rarely a straight line. It requires more than a spark of inspiration; it depends on navigation, collaboration, and the perseverance to transform ideas into systems that last.

This winter, a powerful convergence of design leadership will take place in San Diego as the UC San Diego Design Lab launches its highly anticipated public lecture series, Design@Large: Design to Action – Building Innovation and Impact. The six-part series brings together leaders across disciplines to explore how design moves beyond concept and into meaningful, real-world impact.

NewSchool of Architecture and Design is proud to share that Daniela Deutsch, Dean of Architecture, will be a featured speaker during the Wednesday, January 28, 2026 session.

About the Design@Large Series

Running weekly from January 14 through February 25, 2026, Design@Large goes beyond celebrating polished outcomes. Hosted by Michèle Morris, the series invites students, researchers, civic partners, and business leaders into candid conversations about the process of innovation.

Rather than focusing solely on finished products, discussions center on the often-overlooked “messy middle” of design—where ideas are tested, challenged, refined, and ultimately brought to life. Topics include how early concepts find direction, how momentum is built within communities, and how meaningful work becomes embedded in systems that endure.

Dean Daniela Deutsch | January 28, 2026

On January 28, Dean Deutsch will take the stage alongside a distinguished lineup of voices spanning architecture, culture, equity, and entrepreneurship. The series’ emphasis on human-centered design and the creation of “just futures” closely aligns with NewSchool’s commitment to architectural rigor, social responsibility, and civic engagement.

Dean Deutsch joins an impressive roster of featured speakers throughout the series, including Danica Vallone, Zachary Johnson, Jennifer Rochlis, Ph.D., Katalina Silva, Kamaal Martin, Jonathon Glus, and Linda Caballero Sotelo.

Alumni Spotlight: Mehdi Taghavi

Founder of Taghavi Design Studio

Mehdi Taghavi is the Founder of Taghavi Design Studio, an architectural design practice based in Arizona; focused on thoughtful, client-centered residential architecture, interior renovations, and both small, and large-scale commercial projects.

Taghavi’s background spans over two decades of international and U.S. experience, with work across the Middle East, North America, Central America, and the United States. His approach emphasizes design integrity, human experience, and contextual sensitivity—balancing strong architectural ideas with buildability and real-world constraints.

When asked why he chose NewSchool, he shared that “the strong emphasis on design excellence, critical thinking, and hands-on engagement with real architectural challenges stood out to him. The academic rigor, paired with a culture that encouraged exploration and responsibility, played a key role in shaping how I approach architecture today—both creatively and professionally.”

Through his perspective and experience, Taghavi provided meaningful insight for prospective and current students alike, helping them better envision their path saying “to treat school as more than a place to earn a degree. Use it as a laboratory; test ideas, make mistakes, build relationships, and develop your design voice. Focus on learning how to think like an architect, not just how to produce drawings. Most importantly, stay curious and resilient; architecture rewards those who continue to learn and adapt”.
