Save the Date: Design & Build Summer Intensive

NewSchool Design & Build Summer Intensive 2026 Flyer

For many students, there’s a moment when something clicks. An idea becomes a sketch, a model, or a structure they can actually hold in their hands. It’s the moment creativity turns into possibility.

This summer, NewSchool of Architecture & Design invites high school students to experience that moment through the Design & Build Summer Intensive—a four-day, hands-on studio experience on campus where creativity, mentorship, and collaboration come together.

Guided by faculty mentors and industry professionals, students will work in our design studios exploring how ideas move from concept to creation. Participants will gain exposure to multiple disciplines, including Architecture, Design, and Construction Management, helping them understand how each field contributes to shaping the built environment.

Throughout the program, students will:

Work in hands-on studio sessions building models and prototypes

Participate in interactive workshops with faculty and industry professionals

Explore architecture, product design, and construction management tracks

Connect with mentors and peers who share an interest in design and building

The program concludes with a final showcase, where students present their work to family and friends, celebrating the ideas and projects they’ve developed over the four-day experience.

        Early Registration: April 1 – April 14

To keep the studio experience collaborative and mentorship-focused, space is limited. Families and students are encouraged to submit an inquiry to receive program updates and early access to registration.

Submit the inquiry form to stay informed about the Design & Build – Summer Intensive Program.

NewSchool Dean of Architecture to Speak at UCSD on Jan 28

San Diego, CA — Innovation is rarely a straight line. It requires more than a spark of inspiration; it depends on navigation, collaboration, and the perseverance to transform ideas into systems that last.

This winter, a powerful convergence of design leadership will take place in San Diego as the UC San Diego Design Lab launches its highly anticipated public lecture series, Design@Large: Design to Action – Building Innovation and Impact. The six-part series brings together leaders across disciplines to explore how design moves beyond concept and into meaningful, real-world impact.

NewSchool of Architecture and Design is proud to share that Daniela Deutsch, Dean of Architecture, will be a featured speaker during the Wednesday, January 28, 2026 session.

        About the Design@Large Series

Running weekly from January 14 through February 25, 2026, Design@Large goes beyond celebrating polished outcomes. Hosted by Michèle Morris, the series invites students, researchers, civic partners, and business leaders into candid conversations about the process of innovation.

Rather than focusing solely on finished products, discussions center on the often-overlooked “messy middle” of design—where ideas are tested, challenged, refined, and ultimately brought to life. Topics include how early concepts find direction, how momentum is built within communities, and how meaningful work becomes embedded in systems that endure.

        Dean Daniela Deutsch | January 28, 2026

On January 28, Dean Deutsch will take the stage alongside a distinguished lineup of voices spanning architecture, culture, equity, and entrepreneurship. The series’ emphasis on human-centered design and the creation of “just futures” closely aligns with NewSchool’s commitment to architectural rigor, social responsibility, and civic engagement.

Dean Deutsch joins an impressive roster of featured speakers throughout the series, including Danica Vallone, Zachary Johnson, Jennifer Rochlis, Ph.D., Katalina Silva, Kamaal Martin, Jonathon Glus, and Linda Caballero Sotelo.

        Event Details

NewSchool encourages architecture students, design professionals, and members of the broader community to attend this session in support of Dean Deutsch and to gain insight into how design operates within complex, real-world contexts.
