Join us for a Summer Intersession courses designed to give participants a deep dive into exciting topics in architecture and design, while enjoying the beautiful summer in California.

Whether you are exploring the downtown skyscrapers, visiting San Diego’s world-class museums, or soaking up the sun on the beach, there is plenty to keep you inspired during this summer.

Summer Intersession 2017

We are working on an exciting line up of courses for summer of 2017.

Neuroscience for Architecture
Program Dates: August 14th - 17th, 2017
Program Fee: $2,500

NewSchool’s Neuroscience for Architecture summer intersession program guides architecture/design/neuroscience professionals in an exploration of the juncture of brain and the built environment. Program participants develop a working knowledge of the brain and learn aspects of how it processes spatial cues. Studio work in the program utilizes evidence-based design approach, grounding architectural concepts in neuroscience.

The 4-day program consists of lectures by world-renowned faculty, workshops, field trips, guest speakers and networking, as well as access to NewSchool facilities including the Walter Library, Design Studios and Materials Lab. Continental breakfasts and lunches are included daily, along with a reception and dinner during the final evening of the program.

Healthy Urbanism
Program Dates: August 7th-10th, 2017
Program Fee: $2,500

NewSchool’s Healthy Urbanism summer intersession program guides students in the study of the growing acknowledgment that the way cities and neighborhoods are designed directly impacts the health of the residents, workers and visitors. At the same time, many designers and planners fail to create healthy urban environments through a lack of understanding, experience and training. This programs provides a grounding in the process and design strategies that promote healthful cities. The program covers the broad context of urban issues including regionalism, community and public infrastructure. Addressing current issues involving the homeless, senior citizens, and demographic trends provides an informational base relative to social, political and economic issues associated with urban settings.

High School Design Experience
Program Fee: $750

The High School Design Experience is a fun and challenging four day summer studio for high school students. Led by experienced academics and practitioners, the activities teach you to think differently about design. By exploring downtown San Diego, the city itself becomes and extended classroom or urban laboratory. Students examine graffiti, urban art forms, product design, architecture and respond by designing an urban installation.

California by Design
Program Dates: August 14th-24th, 2017
Program Fee: $1,500

California by Design is a truly integrative design seminar/studio offered by NewSchool, School of Design, where students are exposed to California as a very specific context for design innovation. California is a perceived worldwide as the epicenter of innovation by design both in technology and in lifestyle goods and brands.

What is the nature of California and what nurtures innovative thinking? How do successful brands that originate locally become exported worldwide? How are artifacts, environments and experiences designed in California?

The seminar is an exploration of Californian cultures, lifestyles and industries (such as surfing, action sports, cinema, high-tech) and the way they influenced the lifestyles and the imaginations worldwide. With this seminar students will be able to connect the designs of artifacts to built environments and investigate how branding influences cultural, natural, anthropological, social, historical and economic trends in a systemic and contextual way.

Leadership in Construction Management
Program Fee: $3,000

The Leadership in Construction Management is a 5-week online course with a 1 week residency program for mid-career professionals in construction management

Building Information Modeling (BIM)
Program Fee: $3,000

The Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a 5-week online course with a 1 week residency program for mid-career professionals in architecture and construction management.
