New Degree Program in Strategic Design and Management

New Degree Program in Strategic Design and Management

San Diego, CA—October 30, 2014—NewSchool of Architecture & Design is introducing its newest degree program that will help prepare students for global careers in a new era of design. The Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Design and Management was developed to meet the projected market need for design professionals who are capable of linking design with other business and leadership functions, as well as helping an organization better innovate through strategic and design thinking. The program’s unique collaboration with Domus Academy in Milan, Italy, will help ensure NewSchool students learn to apply critical design-thinking skills to meet a variety of business challenges both domestically and globally.

“Design is playing a more strategic role for industry and executives today, who expect designers to develop a vision, manage interdisciplinary teams, and play a whole new range of connective and inspiring roles within the organization,” said Elena Pacenti, Director of Domus Academy School of Design at NewSchool. “The NewSchool Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Design and Management prepares students for these types of real-world situations.”

According to Pacenti, professionals entering the market or expanding their career opportunities must not only have a range of design skills but also be able to harness more management-savvy topics — such as business strategy and market research — which will ultimately help identify the next generation of products and services. The Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Design and Management will teach students how to use design as a strategic asset for industry and social innovation challenges.

The program starts with building a foundation in practical design thinking and working, and emphasizes the role of design as an incubator for innovation. Through courses in user and market research, manufacturing, sustainability, co-creation, branding, and innovative business modeling, students learn about the interdisciplinary ecosystem surrounding design and how to think and present on product, service, experience, and market strategy. Enrollees in NewSchool’s Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Design and Management, who will work closely with international design faculty and other experts in the Domus Academy School of Design at NewSchool, will also have the opportunity to study abroad in the world design center of Milan, Italy, at no additional tuition cost.

Throughout the program, students will learn the skills necessary to launch careers as design strategists, design researchers, and project managers within a design department or agency. They will also be equipped with the necessary knowledge to realize an entrepreneurial design role, learning to develop comprehensive strategies for bringing new products and services to life and identifying opportunities and unmet needs in the global marketplace.

The program benefits a broad range of students, from those in high school interested in careers that combine design knowledge with business skills, to practicing designers who want to take on a larger leadership role with design projects and teams. Program enrollment is open now for classes beginning in October 2015. Visit https://newschoolarch.edu/request-info/ to start the registration process or call 1-800-490-7081 to learn more.

Student Team Finalists in Sukkah Design Competition

A NewSchool student team has been selected as a finalist in the 2014 Sukkah Design Competition. The designers were asked to present a modern take on a Sukkah; an ancient temporary structure often used during festivals. The students took inspiration from the unique shape of Pringles chips to create three harmonious panels that resemble elegant petals.

The use of non-traditional materials made the design a fan favorite. “Humbleness of the materials, waterproof cardboard tubes, goes back to the original shelter in using what they had available,” comments Sukkah judge, Jessica Lee Vences. “The lightness of the structure contributes to the temporary feeling of the Sukkah.”

The students have been given a $2,500 build stipend and will be constructing the design over a 24 hour time period. The winner will be announced on October 12th.

Video: The Design Critique

Providing and receiving feedback is a highly valuable step toward improving a design’s final outcome. Discussing which approaches are or aren’t working and why — as part of a critique — can encourage designers to view their work objectively, provide different viewpoints, define a clearer direction, and can create trust through collaboration in a team environment.

San Diego—July 8, 2014—Four NewSchool of Architecture & Design students have been selected by Red Bull to compete July 8-12 in the Red Bull Creation Competition, a 72 hour innovation competition which challenges the nation’s best and brightest makers, hackers, and inventors to innovate around a secret topic.

The project, which developed in a fourth year Urban Issues class with Luisa Shultz, instructor at NewSchool of Architecture & Design, was selected as one of six finalists from across the country to compete against five well-established organizations. Competing under the name Tactical Urbanists, this was the only student group selected to compete. Julio A. Media, David Harrison, Anastasia Podolskaya, and Boyd Wheeler will travel to Detroit July 8-12 to participate in the competition. “Our theme is to activate space through problem solving derived from our urban background mixed with the challenges which will be faced from the competition and the location. With our architectural background, we have attained the ability to look at problems through a different lens than most. One of our greatest strengths is our ability to see hidden potentials in areas which most people would not recognize. Architectural studies have provided us with a diverse background of experience, which allows us to make connections across various topics,” said David Harrison, Co-Founder/Designer.

Tactical Urbanists will split the award evenly among the team and invest in finishing their final year at NewSchool of Architecture & Design. “We have organized this group with the ambition to continue developing urban tactics to respond to the issues of the communities of San Diego well into the future. We believe that this new collaboration we have formed will not only develop ourselves professionally, but also represent the importance of the NewSchool of Architecture & Design for the future of our urban environments.”

Support Tactical Urbanists by voting on Twitter or Instagram using, “#RBCreation”, “#myvote”, and #TacticalUrbanists now through Saturday, July 12 by 4 p.m. PT.

Design Studio Explores Concepts for Porto, Portugal Community Center With Architect Alvaro Siza

Following their recent visit to Porto, Portugal, a group of NewSchool of Architecture & Design students is developing concept designs for a cultural and community center based on their on-site research and meetings with famed architect Alvaro Siza. As part of the unique global design studio project, Siza is providing ongoing feedback to the students during the Spring term.

The NewSchool 2nd year graduate students participating in the “Porto Studio” are: David Hoppel, Gwynn Beasley, Tom Quaas, Kevin Sander, Tyler Starow, Abdul Alhemiddi, Ammar Alammar, Meshaal Abanmi, Jeremy Kossack, Trang Nguyen, and Julia Cota. NewSchool Professor Tatiana Berger, who spent years working with the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Siza on multiple projects in Europe and the U.S., is leading the class.

The students initially went to Porto with the idea of collecting ideas for a new public library concept. After meetings with Siza, the project evolved to consider Porto’s plans for a cultural and community center that would educate the public about architecture and its production. The proposed center would include exhibition spaces, a library, auditorium, classrooms, archives, workshops, restaurant and cafe. It would also incorporate gardens and outdoor terraces, exhibition spaces for sculpture, as well as other outdoor community spaces. NewSchool students are developing ideas for two possible sites for the project: one in the center of Old Porto and another closer to the coast in a zone called “Foz” (part of Porto).

“This is a remarkable global design opportunity for NewSchool students to work with a renowned architect, Alvaro Siza, and to put into practice the design concepts they have learned and developed in San Diego,” said Berger. “International projects like this challenge students to explore different cultural perspectives and to consider the needs of local communities on a global scale.”

Preliminary design concepts were presented in mid-May and final presentations and renderings of the project will take place on June 11. Alvaro Siza will be reviewing the work produced by our students during the months of June and July.

“String Theory” Applied to San Diego Downtown Railway Depot/Marine Terminal

Camden Wade and Steven Hansen of NewSchool of Architecture & Design in San Diego developed design ideas for a section of San Diego County’s Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project – a regional plan to strengthen transportation options along the region’s coastal areas. The concepts were produced during a special NewSchool design studio course co-taught by Kai-Uwe Bergmann, a partner at Bjarke Ingels Group, and NewSchool instructor and local architect Frank Wolden. The students in the studio identified seven areas for intervention through an approach called “String Theory” that addresses the region’s urban development issues. This project is one of the seven areas of focus.

Area of Intervention: San Diego’s Downtown Railway Depot and Marine Terminal

Synposis

The Downtown Railway Depot and Marine Terminal play a historical part in San Diego’s past working waterfront. Playing a major role in the distribution of goods, the terminal and rail lines cemented San Diego’s importance as a trading post from Central Asian fruits to Asian automakers. However, the current waterfront marine terminal is underutilized and would be well suited to allow the downtown to develop portions of its waterfront location. Additionally, the rail yards currently serve more as a rail depot than as an active rail corridor and should be reorganized to allow for a better connection between San Diego’s downtown and its waterfront. Thus the Downtown Marine Terminal Station is proposed to become the high-speed rail terminus servicing the West Coast as well as providing a transit center from local light rail and bus traffic. The station master plan would reorganize and centralize the industrial areas of the marine terminal and warehouses into one area, thus opening the rest for the development of cultural programs, retail and office as well as park lands. This is one of them.

This is one of seven projects produced by the BIG-NewSchool special studio. To learn more about this project, and others developed by the class: “NewSchool-BIG Studio: String Theory.”
