San Diego—Jan. 23, 2014—NewSchool of Architecture & Design (NewSchool) has named Gregory J. Marick as its president, effective Jan. 13, 2014. Marick brings more than 15 years of experience in the education arena to his new role at the school.
Marick previously served as president of The Art Institute of California—Orange County. During his tenure there, Marick improved student satisfaction, expanded enrollment and secured regional accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. His improvements in academic programs, student retention and career services helped the college dramatically boost its ranking as a leader in higher education for design-related fields such as animation and Web design. He also expanded the college’s international partnerships in China, including establishing a formal partnership with Kede College in Beijing.
“Greg’s experience and leadership skills make him a natural choice for the role of president—but it is his passion and his relentless energy that will make the biggest impact on the future of NewSchool,” said Vivian Sanchez, Chair of the NewSchool Board of Directors. “He has helped steer the growth of two design colleges through program expansions, new student recruitment and student retention. His solid track record as an educational leader in design professions, combined with his business acumen and collaborative organizational skills, are the qualities we need to guide NewSchool during this important time of growth.”
Prior to his role as president of The Art Institute of California—Orange County, Marick served as president of The Art Institute of California—Hollywood. He spearheaded a transformation of the school, improving the college’s academics, student life, career services, information technology and facilities. He also earned the school re-accreditation from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. Marick joins NewSchool as the school launches new programs in product design, animation, game art and game programming in addition to its current programs in architecture, construction management, digital media arts and interior design.
“I am thrilled to be joining NewSchool of Architecture & Design as we expand the school’s interdisciplinary offerings in design-related fields with an international focus,” said Marick. “I look forward to providing our faculty, staff and students with the leadership and support to achieve academic and institutional success. This is an exciting phase of NewSchool’s evolution—one that builds on the school’s quality academic offerings and that is inspired by our collaborations with award-winning design schools in our global network.”
Early in his career, Marick was Director of Regional Operations for Science Enrichment Services, a company providing science enrichment programs for grades K through 6. He also previously worked for Score Learning, Inc., a division of Kaplan that provided educational enrichment programs for grades K–8.
He earned his MBA from the University of Southern California and his BBA from Loyola Marymount University. He previously served as advisor to the board of Technology for Results in Elementary Education and as a member of the board of directors for Clothes the Deal, a nonprofit organization that serves low-income job seekers.
