NewSchool Hosts Its 31st Annual Commencement At Spreckels Organ Pavilion

San Diego CA, June 25, 2016 – NewSchool of Architecture & Design (NewSchool) will host its 31st annual commencement ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 25 at Spreckels Organ Pavilion in San Diego, Calif. NewSchool will welcome commencement speaker Dr. Phillip Alvelda Program >Manager at DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office and the founding Chairman of The Westminster Institute for Science Education, a 501C3 organization that helps K-12 schools extend STEM education placing emphasis on creativity and innovation. Prior to these roles, Dr. Alvelda was the founding CEO of MobiTV, the world’s leading provider of live TV over mobile networks and was a developer of spacecraft hardware and software systems and new computing architectures at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

In addition to Dr. Alvelda, the graduation program will feature undergraduate student speaker Harpreet Basi and graduate student speaker Stephen Graham. The class of 2016 will celebrate 128 students who have completed or will complete their degree requirements from its Architecture, Interior Architecture and Design, Interior Design, Construction Management and Digital Media Arts programs.

“Here at NewSchool our graduates have experienced design education, which has led them to be guided toward a new way of seeing, thinking and understanding,” said Marvin J. Malecha, FAIA, President and Chief Academic Officer of NewSchool of Architecture & Design. “It’s been a sensational year at NewSchool and our graduates should be thrilled with all of the hard work they have achieved. I’m looking forward to seeing the innovative designs our talented graduates will create in the near future.”

This evening during the university’s annual graduate student showcase, graduates and faculty members will be recognized with special commencement awards, prior to Saturday’s commencement ceremony. The following honors will be awarded:

Henry Adams Medal and Certificate

The American Institute of Architects awards the prestigious Henry Adams Medal to the top-ranking graduating student in each National Architectural Accrediting Board Architecture program. A Certificate of Merit is also awarded to the second-ranking graduating student recognizing their excellence in architecture.

Alpha Rho Chi Medal

Since 1931, the Alpha Rho Chi >Medal recognizes graduating architecture students for their leadership and service and for what they have to offer to the future of the profession with the Alpha Rho Chi Medal.

Outstanding Design Award

Evolved from the “Designer of the Year” award, the Outstanding Design Award is one of NewSchool’s oldest student awards. The award is unique as it focuses on design and is looked at as innovative or very accomplished. Any work associated with the award is looked to be of the highest possible visual and material quality.

In addition, NewSchool will honor an Outstanding Student and Outstanding Faculty Member Award.
