My time as a student consolidated my passion for architecture, a passion which I am continually trying to nurture. The foundation I received at NewSchool, through the teachers and friends I met there, as well as the learning environment we were surrounded with, kept me true to my passion.
I wanted a chance to turn raw spaces into sustainable and unique rooms. I believe interior architecture isn’t just about being creative, it also applies psychological and technical skills.
I enjoyed the smaller classrooms and the relationships we could build with the instructors. It made the learning process better and more personal. My fondest memories were when the construction management students would work on their homework and projects together up in the construction management loft.
I needed to make a living and be able to work during the day and attend classes in the evenings. It was almost like NewSchool was made for me.
I enjoyed the willingness of all faculty to work side by side with us to help accomplish our goals. It’s also not too bad living and going to school in Downtown San Diego!
Try to get as much experience as possible in every single part of our field. Be flexible — don’t stay in one place. Do everything that you can, from model making to drafting to 3D work to parametrics to roles like marketing and business development, project management. It’s a very complex career. And you get to be good at all these things.
NewSchool is a community that is very project-based with focus on real-life projects and global issues and for those who learn best by doing and observing. I would say this is the school to be at.
NewSchool taught me how to be critical and how to approach problems and design challenges. They introduced me to processes of problem-solving that engage both theoretical positions and very technical methodologies.
When I visited the school, I was hooked when I saw the studios filled with students making architectural models! Hands down the faculty are the best. George Welch and the rest of the faculty are amazing.
My favorite thing about attending NewSchool was having a place dedicated to design work. As soon as you step foot in the door, it’s creative energy and collaboration everywhere.
New students should choose NewSchool because it has a small community vibe and a great reputation within the design industry.
The community of people I was surrounded by, everyone seemed like a familiar face and if you ever needed someone’s help or just another set of eyes to look at your project everyone was always willing to help out.
After graduating from the Master of Architecture program at NewSchool in 2011, David Michael, Kyle Preish, and Slade Fischer founded their own design firm, Tecture. Their work quickly began making a statement all over San Diego, from design/build projects such as the Patio on Goldfinch and the newly opened Kettner Exchange to an installation in the San Diego International Airport.
We believe Quartyard can serve as a model for cities across the U.S. looking for unique economic development ideas,” said NewSchool alumnus and CEO of RAD Lab, Philip Auchettl. “It is a feasible way to temporarily re-invent empty spaces while improving quality of life for residents.
My favorite aspect was the relationship that was built between me and my professors – how they were great and humble. They believed in me when I couldn’t believe in myself.
I serve on the NewSchool Alumni Advisory Board. I serve on the AIA San Diego Board of Directors as the Membership Commissioner. I serve as Co-Chair of the City of La Mesa – Design Review Board. I will serve as the inaugural President of SDNOMA. I now work in a project manager role with the Judicial Council of California.
My favorite thing about attending NewSchool was the collaborative work environment and being in downtown San Diego. Shortly after graduating, I was hired at C Squared Social as a Jr. Graphic Designer. I’ve also been learning new programs like Adobe Dimension, where I create 3D renderings for fun.

My favorite aspect of attending NewSchool was the intimate and supportive community of faculty, staff, and students.
When KMD hired John in 1996 to work in its Justice division, he became interested in the “humanity of architecture” and how to apply evidence-based design within juvenile justice, detention, and mental health treatment facilities.
What I liked the most about NewSchool was the library. There are so many great resources for students. My favorite memories while attending were the people, the projects, and presenting my final project.
After receiving his B.Arch from NewSchool, Craig has become an important voice in the San Diego architecture community. Craig is a Designer at DBRDS and previously served as the Vice President of the Board for the San Diego Architectural Foundation, San Diego’s biggest community outlet for architecture and design.
I chose NewSchool for the unique curriculum and urban setting. As a student, I found that the relationships you develop with faculty and classmates are as important as what you learn.
Personally, I create resources that bridge the research of children, creativity and learning with the realities of designing and building schools. Professionally, I oversaw the construction of the site modernization of Clairemont Canyons Academy in San Diego.
It is still early in my career, but I was placed in charge of handling the logistics for a 100 Meg. solar farm due to my drive and attention to detail. With 100s of thousands of pieces of material arriving on the site within 6 months, it is part of my job to ensure all the material is here on site when it is supposed to be.
I started my own GC [general contractor] firm – First Coast Construction (CSLB 1056999). I am also a government contractor working as a Quality Control Manager for the largest specialty contractor on ENR, Quanta Services. My division (Nova Group) specializes in jet-a fuel storage and distribution. Currently working at the San Diego International Airport.
The small class setting and the instructors really caring about you to stay past time to look over items one-on-one.
My favorite thing about NewSchool is that it was large enough to be noticed in the community but small enough that you could know everyone and not get lost in the crowd. It was very much like a familiar community.
My favorite thing about NewSchool was its ideal location and weather. Design-wise, San Diego has a diversity of districts and each has its own architectural style and historical significance.
I found NewSchool and its master’s degree was all about how architecture influences us humans psychologically and neurologically. That’s something that has been important to me ever since.
What stands out the most about NewSchool is the collaboration and mentorship I experienced with my professors and my classmates. My program was hands-on and taught primarily by adjunct faculty who were actively practicing in the field of architecture outside of the classroom.
