DEI Statement

Encouraging Diversity

NewSchool of Architecture & Design was established with the vision of fostering a non-traditional and innovative educational environment. The institution has always encouraged new ways of looking at design and the world, and this is reflected in the name, NewSchool. The university contends that creative and critical thinking flourishes in an environment of diverse thought and varied opinion. We are continually expanding our national and international network as well as solidifying our reputation for excellence in academia and design practice. We are committed to nurturing future leaders and creators who will shape the world with their unique design solutions. School wide initiatives, academic programs, and resources are rooted in empathy and equality to ensure that students, staff and faculty have the support and resources needed to be successful during their time here. Everyone is encouraged and empowered to be themselves, to be open to new experiences and to be a part of human-centered design solutions that may address today’s most pressing challenges.

We cultivate a culture of belonging and connectedness, valuing, respecting, supporting, and engaging all members of our community. We encourage authenticity and the expression of diverse perspectives. NewSchool also strives to foster an inclusive learning community where students, faculty and staff are treated with respect, ideas are freely expressed, and differences are accepted and valued.

Faculty Affinity Areas

The pillars serve to identify and support core institutional values for our students, which grounds program curricula, while the affinity areas provide the driving focus for research and scholarship among faculty.
