SAN DIEGO–June 22, 2021–Dr. Mitra Kanaani, after 29 years serving the education of future architects at NewSchool of Architecture & Design is becoming an Emeritus.
Starting as an adjunct in 1992, she very soon assumed responsibilities in multiple capacities, as the Chair of the entire Architecture, Acting Dean, Chair of the Undergraduate program and in the past six years as the Director of the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure Track (IPAL). She led the full architecture accreditation of the program and undertook coordination and preparation of six successful continuation accreditation reviews for the institution throughout the past two and half decades. Mitra was instrumental in the development of the Graduate Program and the current successful IPAL track at the institution.
All throughout these years she maintained a full-time instructional load, teaching integrated design, and tectonics courses, while simultaneously serving in various capacities with national architectural collaterals as: secretary of the Board of the Association Schools of architecture ACSA, member of the national American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the National Council of Architecture Registration boards (NCARB) Education Committees and as international evaluator for National Architectural Accreditation Board (NAAB).
During the past decade as a researcher, author and editor, she has published major editorial books involving a number of national and international researchers, practitioners and educators as well as experts in various fields of design, science, technology and architecture in her editorial publication. Her last publication on Paradigms of Performativity was published in 2020 and currently she is involved in another major publication of Ecological Design Thinking and Ecotopian Visions in Architecture and Urbanism.
Mitra has also been the recipient of multiple local, state, and national awards for her contributions to the education of the future architects. She is a registered architect and a Fellow of American Institute of Architects, FAIA.
