NewSchool is Title Sponsor for the 40th Annual Orchids & Onions Design Awards

NewSchool is Title Sponsor for the 40th Annual Orchids & Onions Design Awards

San Diego CA, Sept. 15, 2016 – NewSchool of Architecture & Design (NewSchool) will serve as the title sponsor of Orchids & Onions, an annual interactive, community-based program geared towards raising awareness and encouraging practical discourse in response to San Diego’s built environment. The event will take place on Thursday, October 13, with a reception at Horton Plaza Park, followed by an awards ceremony at Spreckels Theatre. Orchids & Onions is and educational and fundraising program of the San Diego Architectural Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to educating and promoting outstanding architecture, planning and urban design within the San Diego region.

A jury of design professionals and artists have been selected to determine the official Orchids & Onions based on public submissions in categories including: architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, historic preservation and miscellaneous.

“Orchids & Onions is a fantastic annual event that urges the San Diego community to nominate and recognize the exceptional architecture and design that is on display in our region,” said Marvin J. Malecha, president and chief academic officer, NewSchool of Architecture & Design. “The event, and the San Diego Architectural Foundation, has the courage to take a closer look at what is happening in this space, both positive and negative, and comment on it, ultimately making our design community stronger. We are proud that several of our alumni, faculty and students and their projects have been recognized this year as Orchids.”

NewSchool Alumni, Faculty and Staff Nominees

NewSchool is proud to announce the alumni, faculty and student nominees who have been nominated as Orchids:

  • NewSchool Contributing Faculty: Park & Rec (category: Landscape Architecture) – Designer: Marianne Berg
  • NewSchool Students: STEAM Pavilion (category: Miscellaneous)- Designer: NewSchool students and faculty Ramiro Losada Amor and Victor Navarro

NewSchool undergraduate students built a pavilion for the STEAMConnect’s annual conference focusing on lectures, debates, and workshops revolving around the links between Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. The STEAM Pavilion idea originated from the necessity to accommodate the activities that take place at the annual conferences of STEAMConnect. These activities involve talking, sitting, eating and, above all, meeting. Students found that Architecture is a clear combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Art, so addressing the necessities of the STEAMConnect annual reception would be the perfect example of STEM + Art disciplines coming together, blending creativity, design and technical skills. In 2016, the design also received an A+ Awards Special Mention from the Architizer.

  • NewSchool Alumni: Prima Vista (Category: Miscellaneous) Designer: Michael Angelo Venturtella
  • NewSchool Alumni: George’s at the Cove (Category: Interior Design) – Designer: Tecture

“The restaurant, with its rich history and iconic reputation is the quintessential San Diego restaurant with a view. Therefore, using the La Jolla Cove as our palette, the design for the interior become a natural extension of the landscape. The space embodies the tranquility of the beach, pulling cues from the land, sea, and sky. Porous concrete light fixtures coupled with white quartz tables and bar top are cool and calming that contrast with the bronze colored led mirrors and inverted Torrey Pine slab tables which add a sense of warmth and vibrancy. The space serves as a framework that extends and embellishes the natural beauty abroad. Employing strong linearity in the wooden ceiling system, views are drawn outward towards the ocean. A broad range of dining options embellish the site lines to the view. The interior has been custom catered to the guests’ experience. Comfort, variety, function, and a touch of elegance work together to revive a truly unique bar.” – Slade Fischer, Tecture, Inc.

“The Firehouse, located in Pacific Beach, was remodeled to embrace a new and vibrant design without losing touch with its playful history. Focusing more heavily on the word “fire” as a concept, the wooden cladding that covers the facade and downstairs space was burned in a method called Shou Sugi Ban to give it a charcoal appearance. Taking full advantage of the proximity to the beach, the facade opens up to give patrons access to the ocean views and vibrant street life. The charred downstairs, with its glowing brass accents, inviting fireplace, and hanging greenery, contrasts strikingly with the light and airy upstairs. Complete with VIP style cabanas, a grotto bar surrounding by a vegetated feature mural wall, and a shaded awning system, the upstairs is a year round popular destination” – Slade Fischer, Tecture, Inc.

  • NewSchool Alumni: Woholle Juice Bar (Category: Interior Design) – Designer: Tecture

“Being an adventure based company in La Jolla, Everyday California (and by extension Woholle Juice Box) is intimately tied to the La Jolla landscape, tidal zones, and overall California beach life. We incorporated elements of the La Jolla caves and cliff topography into the rustic material pallet of Everyday California. The design is unique, exciting and simple to navigate. The abstracted topographic elements have become intrinsic to the Woholle brand. Custom lighting playfully illuminates the space. The wood tiles allow for easy clean-up while still mimicking the reclaimed wood of Everyday California” – Slade Fischer, Tecture, Inc.

Master’s Candidate at NewSchool Receives AAUW International Fellowship

WASHINGTON – The American Association of University Women (AAUW) awarded a 2016-17 International Fellowship to Noura Bishay from Egypt. She is a Master’s degree student in Architecture at NewSchool of Architecture & Design.

AAUW International Fellows are selected for their academic achievement, scholarly promise, and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. Thousands of AAUW International Fellows have returned to their home countries to become leaders in government, academia, community activism, business, and science.

Noura Bishay is an Egyptian architect who strives to encourage women in her field to focus on homeless people and slum area/informal settlements. She draws inspiration from Malala Yousafzai’s activism for the voiceless: “I raise up my voice—not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard.” Bishay has worked on spreading awareness to girls in her home country, and now she is pursuing her master’s degree in architecture.

For the 2016–17 academic year, AAUW awarded a total of $3.7 million to more than 230 scholars, research projects, and programs promoting education and equity for women and girls through six fellowships and grants programs. The first AAUW International Fellowship was awarded in 1917, making this one of the oldest and most prestigious fellowships in the United States.

“Through our International Fellowship program, AAUW positively impacts women and girls globally. This year, we are funding projects related to the environment, health, and women’s leadership, to name just a few,” said Gloria Blackwell, AAUW vice president of fellowships, grants, and global programs. “Our members are very concerned about the status of women here and abroad, and these fellowship programs allow us to extend our reach in a meaningful way. It’s all about women helping women.”

AAUW is one of the world’s leading supporters of graduate women’s education, having awarded more than $100 million in fellowships, grants, and awards to 12,000 women from more than 140 countries since 1888. The AAUW Fellowships and Grants program is one of the oldest and largest programs in the world exclusively for women.

Domus Academy School of Design Director Elena Pacenti Lands Cover of HATCH Magazine

Domus Academy School of Design Director Elena Pacenti Lands Cover of HATCH Magazine

Elena Pacenti, Director of Domus Academy School of Design at NewSchool, appears on HATCH Magazine’s Summer 2016 issue. The publication, which launched in 2016 by San Diego Magazine, highlights what’s “cool” in San Diego along with great San Diego success stories. Elena is also featured in the issue’s article “The 12 Most Important People in Design Right Now.

In the article, Elena expresses her viewpoints on her passion of design. “For me, design is about envisioning what does not yet exist. In design, we must be visionary about the way we live, move, eat, and work. In order to do this, the design culture has to be a complementary mix of local, international, and global influences all at the same time. Ensuring we are exposing ourselves, as designers, to diversity allows us to observe the behaviors that encourage us to be innovative. We need to desire to see design as a culture and not just as profession, and to me, culture means recognizing the human being and how design can touch every human sense. Design is never without thinking about humans. It is an exciting time to be here in San Diego, as its design industry is reinventing itself and finding its place among the global design industry. This momentum is being fueled, in part, by Domus Academy.”

Elena is currently focused on establishing and enhancing the Domus Academy School of Design at the NewSchool of Architecture & Design, centered around “learning by designing,” where students solve real-life design problems through collaborative projects. This living, urban laboratory combines world-renowned Italian design methodology along with the innovative style of California creativity.

The “most important people in design right now” list also included Chad Q. Martin, Senior Designer at HP/Head of UX Speakeasy, Scott Robinson, President and CEO at FreshForm, Don Norman, Director of The Design Lab at UC San Diego/Author of The Design of Everyday Things, Katie Rast, Founder and Director of Fab Lab San Diego, Ron Miriello, Principal & AIGA Fellow/Director of Miriello, Patrick Hadley, CEO of Hadley Media, Nate Spees, Partner at Grizzly/Strategy Director and Co-Founder of Creative Mornings San Diego, Sharon Carmichael, Senior Designer/UX Lead at Intuit, MaeLin Levine, Partner at Visual Asylum/President of Urban Discovery Academy, T. Scott Edwards, Chief Operating Officer at Port of San Diego and Paul Roben, Associate Vice Chancellor, Officer of Innovation and Commercialization at UC San Diego.

DesignMind: A New Path to Architecture Licensure

NewSchool is part of something revolutionary.

Starting this fall, NewSchool is launching its Integrated Path to Architecture Licensure (IPAL) program, which provides students with the opportunity to graduate and obtain architecture licensure in an accelerated manner, saving time and money, while also obtaining a strong education and valuable, real-world experience.

Many architecture schools are so focused on history, theory and schematic design that they don’t get into the necessities of practice. They tend to gloss over them. Architectural media love to publish beautiful drawings and models, but they don’t talk about what it means to be an outstanding spec writer or cover a fuller picture of what it means to be an architect. Students can get a warped view of architectural practice.

Since the early ’90s, I have been talking and writing about the drift away from professional preparation. Most recently, I discussed it as part of a panel at the 2016 American Institute of Architects (AIA) convention in Philadelphia.

As educators, we must bring internships and education together in the architectural curriculum. That is why I’m excited that NewSchool of Architecture & Design is one of 14 architecture schools that are the first to participate in the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) created by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, which regulates the licensing and credentialing of architects. We are also one of only two institutions in California to offer IPAL at the graduate level.

This integrated path places students in real-world situations through paid internships with our industry partners as part of the curriculum. It also allows them to take each of the six parts of the licensure exam while they are still in school with the goal that at graduation, they are licensed architects. Without it, the average age of a person who gets architectural licensure is 33.

This matters because licensure not only makes architects more employable more quickly, it gives them freedom to do more diverse and interesting work, moving from one firm to another, if they desire, with ease. It also decreases the cost of their education and allows them to work half- or full-time in paid internships, which helps them graduate with a firmer financial foundation.

At NewSchool, we already have a tradition of teaching our studios later in the day so students can work in the morning. We also have strong relationships with employers who can give us critical information about intern performance, which helps influence how and what we teach. The most important thing these additional real-world opportunities will give students is a more realistic and well-rounded understanding of—and joy for—what it means to be an architect. It also means they’ll discover early on which part of the field they are most passionate about.

Maybe that’s not so revolutionary after all.

What do you think about the Integrated Path to Architecture Licensure?

New Americans Museum San Diego to Unveil a Joint Project with NewSchool and South Sudanese Refugees

SAN DIEGO – July 27, 2016 – Hosted by the New Americans Museum located in Liberty Station, and students from NewSchool of Architecture & Design and South Sudansese refugees living in City Heights are collaborating in a one-of-a-kind arts exhibition that is part of a global journey of an arts sculpture. TED Fellow and Israeli artist Raffael Lomas has brought his unique collaborative social art to San Diego, where he has partnered with groups who wouldn’t ordinarily come together.

Lomas collaborated with a group of NewSchool students, the Leichtag Foundation, many young South Sudanese refugees, and The Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), a nonprofit public policy hub based in San Diego dedicated to advancing the full economic and social inclusion of refugees. “At NewSchool of Architecture & Design, we are committed to not only learning how we can help our local community, but we are also committed to collaborating with local organizations and groups to make a positive impact on communities, right here in southern California,” said Chuck Crawford, faculty member at NewSchool. “This unique project allowed us to use one of San Diego’s richest resources: its diversity.”

The short documentary, 8000 Paper Clips and one Skype Call, by photographer and filmmaker Nitsan Tal, portrays the whole process of this project and will be featured for the first time at the New Americans Museum, a storytelling space that celebrates the contributions of all immigrants post WWII. “We are delighted to offer our ‘home’ to this unforgettable collaborative installation that unites communities, students, and artists to foster deeper connections and mutual understanding” concluded Linda Sotelo, Executive Director of the Museum.

The project, 8000 paper clips and on Skype call, created by Raffael Lomas and curated by Olga Sureda at the New Americans Museum, San Diego, will open on August 5, 2016 to the public and run through August 25, 2016. A preview reception will be held from 6-7:30pm on Thursday August 4th with the curator in attendance visiting from Spain.

About 8000 Paper Clips and One Skype Call:

The journey began in 2011 when a group of young South Sudanese refugees (some born in Israel) were deported from Israel when South Sudan declared its independence. TED Fellow and renowned Israeli artist Raffael Lomas came upon this unique situation that immediately inspired him to develop a project, when he also found out that Come True, an Israeli Organization, was providing personal sponsorship to the deported children, allowing them safe life and education in Uganda.

In his first trip to Uganda in 2014, Raffael Lomas met the student refugees, becoming aware immediately that deportation had a grave impact on the children with a loss of community and blurred their sense and understanding of a home. Together Raffael with the group of children created a unique art installation of a house made by 8000 paperclips. The foundation for the project was to create a method utilizing artistic and creative tools in order to bring about a social change. Yet, the goal was to have the piece be mobile friendly in order to rebuild it in Israel and skype the community they were forced to leave in Israel. On January 23rd 2015 at 10 am, a skype call was scheduled around the art installation house, between the refugees and their friends, sponsors, exteachers, and family, in Tel Aviv.

The art collaboration was a stepping stone which lead Raffael to travel again to Uganda (Jan 2016) to make a new collaboration happen: Lomas took a group of the Come True youth to Namatumba, a small town, where they volunteered with the community, helping to renovate the local school, teaching the Abuyudia Hebrew and basic Jewish concepts and engaging in other social activities. Through their knowledge and volunteering as teachers, they helped to bridge cultural gaps in epic proportions, an example that projects can evolve into a multi layer system with branches gasping for more light.

After returning from his second trip in Uganda, Raffael made contact with The Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA), a nonprofit public policy hub based in San Diego (U.S) dedicated to advancing the full economic and social inclusion of refugees.

By developing a pluralized front in collaboration with NewSchool, in which a group of students have worked on the designing and building of the house’ doors, the Leichtag Foundation, the research and community organizing PANA and all of the working efforts of many young South Sudanese refugees, this exhibition at the New Americans Museum in San Diego will be presented with the aim to emphasize the barriers that have been broken during the project in its entirety. The short documentary 8000 Paper Clips and one Skype Call, by photographer and filmmaker Nitsan Tal, portrays the whole process of this project.

Art is a practical tool to be used to bring about social change. It bridges the gap between the human emotional experience and the force that drives one to act. Within this context, the exhibition will act as a multi-medium guide to express the story of the project and a glimpse into the life of a refugee. As a chapter comes to an end, the art installation 8000 paper clips will be auctioned off and all proceeds will return to the group of young refugees.

This project shines a powerful light and beckons the question of how one can bridge the gap between the art world with social activism. A cross multi-cultural and systems thinking approach proves just how great an impact an art project can make on humanity.

NewSchool of Architecture & Design Launches Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL)

San Diego, CA – July 28, 2016 – NewSchool of Architecture & Design (NewSchool) is excited to announce the launch of a new, accelerated program which will allow students to pursue architectural licensure upon graduation. NewSchool is proud to be one of only 14 schools in the nation to be accepted by the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) to participate in the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL). In addition, NewSchool is one of only two institutions in California to be approved to offer IPAL at the graduate level. This initiative aims to provide students an opportunity to complete the architectural license requirements while earning their graduate architecture degree, therefore significantly reducing time to launch their careers as licensed architects.

“NewSchool, as one of only 14 higher education institutions in the nation to be selected by the National Council of Architectural Registration Board to provide the Integrated Path to Architecture Licensure, is part of something revolutionary in architecture education, and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this initiative,” said Mitra Kanaani, IPAL Coordinator, NewSchool. “Many architecture schools are so focused on the history, theory and schematic design that they are unable to get into the necessities of practice. At NewSchool, we are focused on bringing education, real-world classroom projects and meaningful internships with our industry partners, together, in the architectural curriculum.”

NewSchool’s IPAL program, a four-year graduate degree program, launching this fall and accepting applications now, is a rigorous architecture education program that aims to combine all requirements for architectural licensure, including professional experience and the Architectural Registration Examination (ARE). The program allows students to begin taking the ARE tests during the second, third and fourth years – two test sections each year. The final (fourth) year of the program will consist of a full-time practicum and final ARE tests.

“This integrated path places students in real-world situations through paid internships with our industry partners as part of the curriculum and will allow students to take each of the six parts of the licensure exam while they are still in school, with the goal that at graduation, they are licensed architects,” said Kanaani. “Licensure not only makes architects more employable more quickly, it also gives them the freedom to do more diverse and interesting work, discovering early on which part of the field they are most passionate about.”
