Celebrating Our Graduates with Lawrence Scarpa

Celebrating Our Graduates with Lawrence Scarpa

On June 24, we will honor the accomplishments of more than 100 graduates from our School of Architecture and Construction Management and our Domus Academy School of Design. What we celebrate is important, and so is how we celebrate. NewSchool is a downtown San Diego institution, located in the city’s innovative design district, and focused on teaching students to be citizen architects and designers. That makes it especially fitting that our ceremony will be held at Symphony Hall and that our speaker will be Lawrence Scarpa.

Larry is a renowned architect who has won numerous awards, and whose firm, Brooks + Scarpa, is ranked the 7th overall top architecture firm in the United States by Architect Magazine. But the reason we asked him to speak at our commencement is his dedication to socially responsible architecture, including sustainability and affordable housing. His work has a level of human and environmental empathy that is unusual of many of the stars emerging in architecture. He also has a joy for the profession that our graduates will find inspiring.

I experienced his love of life and the profession while I was at NC State University. At the college, we were incubating a contemporary art museum for Raleigh, and Larry was the architect we selected to refurbish an old and much-loved warehouse as a permanent home for the collection. Some architects can be difficult, especially when they have the reputation that he does, but he was a pleasure to work with. A true citizen architect, he paid close attention to the context of the building and the needs of its users. His attention to human-centered design made it a success.

I’m looking forward to welcoming Larry to the NewSchool community as we send our citizen architects and designers out into San Diego and beyond.

The NewSchool of Architecture & Design (NewSchool), an awarded architecture and design institution located in downtown San Diego’s East Village design district, is proud to announce its upcoming Graduate Showcase (GradShow) on Friday, June 23, 2017. The event will be held on the NewSchool campus, located at 1249 F Street, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., and will feature more than 100 thesis projects from graduating undergraduate and graduate students. These projects, focused on human-centered design and recommendations for healthy, sustainable spaces, span the disciplines of architecture, construction management, media and product design, and interior architecture and design, and will feature large-scale renderings, models and digital media.

As art is inspired by society and culture, the 2017 thesis projects address a variety of current events and global concerns including sustainability, immigration, and political expression. Additionally, many student projects are inspired by and focus on local San Diego buildings and spaces, such as the area surrounding the Qualcomm Stadium, but also span across the U.S. and globally to countries such as Kenya, Jordan, Iran, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines.

“NewSchool’s GradShow is a solid representation of our talented graduates and their commitment to human-centered design through their work as ‘citizen architects,’ designing for ‘good’ as part of our institution’s Here for Good, by Design mission,” said Marvin J. Malecha, FAIA, president and chief academic officer of NewSchool of Architecture & Design. “This annual tradition is a great way for families, friends and even potential employers to observe unique and creative projects, models and renderings, and contemplate recommendations to solve some of the City’s, and even the world’s, social, environmental and political issues, through conscious design.”

GradShow begins with an Employers Only Event in the afternoon from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. where local companies and press are invited to view the work created by the talented individuals from NewSchool. This exclusive occasion serves as a reverse job fair-like atmosphere where opportunities for engagement and dialogue between students and prospective employers are reached. NewSchool’s GradShow will open to public at 6 p.m. and will include a special gathering for graduates and their families, friends, media and members of the community.

2017 GradShow Thesis

Summaries

Some examples of the student thesis projects on display at the GradShow include, but are not limited to the following projects.

Christopher F Bockelman Fanatic Dogma: A critical analysis and approach to urban stadium design The goal of this thesis is to examine the issues which impact cities with the implementation of stadiums in urban areas. The end result was an exploration into the possible design solutions and an application of findings to a new stadium in San Diego.

Noura Bishay Green Network – Nolen Corridor – Park-to-Bay Project The Thesis study focuses on urban planning, wayfinding and placemaking adapting the “Park to Bay Project,” to connect parks as a way to connect and empower people. It explores how to connect Balboa Park to the Bay through 25th Street and Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy.

Matias Solimano Said Cali-Baja Guard Line: Defensive Systems for Sea Level Rise Effects in Baja California Coastal Communities This study investigates the risks and dangers to the coast of Baja California from storm surges, in the short term, and sea level rise, in the long term, and provides a broader look at the entire San Diego/Tiajuana mega region. These threats are currently putting thousands of coastal settlements at risk and represent a potential divide between local communities and coastal activities.

Jessica Perea Matos Urban Porosity Through Social Housing, Toward Community Engagement in Downtown San Diego There is a need for more affordable housing in San Diego. A high percentage of residential buildings are not affordable to people with low and moderate incomes. This study addresses the challenges of delivering affordable housing and explores how buildings can re-energize street-level activity and improve the quality of public spaces for the benefit of both the community and residents.

Golnar Haddad Aquatecture: Architecture Adaptation to Sea Level Rise This study examines rising sea levels and explores how coastal cities, such as San Diego, must plan for long-term resilience and harmony with the oceans.

Grace Tran Architecture of Tragedy, Architecture of Hope: A dignified home for displaced individuals living in refugee camps in Kenya This project dives into the development of a modular housing unit that is portable and durable and which can adapt and evolve with refugees through their transition from emergency shelter to semi-permanent shelter.

Laura Nering In[formation] This project reframes social identity through collective memory in a concurrently digital and physical environment. It envisions the integration of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and the physical environment.

Montserrat Fernandez-Servitje Implementing Sustainable Practices in Existing Buildings This is an in-depth look at the benefits of green building and the major barriers preventing green operation methods from being more broadly implemented. The project features a handbook of energy, water, and waste tips to help existing buildings quickly and efficiently become greener. The study focuses on San Diego County and incorporates the demographics of the area and provides information and recommendations specific to the climate.

Teresa Dominguez Healthy Learning Environments: Redesign of Emerson-Bandini Elementary School, San Diego Learning environments have not always responded to the needs of elementary school children. At times, school design prioritizes other elements without taking into consideration students’ learning. The purpose of this study is to investigate the variables which influence student performance. Children are also more active than adults and research demonstrates that the senses and cognitive abilities of children are still developing as they mature. Therefore, the project’s design solutions create flexible learning environments to enhance motor skills and promote concentration and tactile learning appropriate to the developmental stage of each child.

Chandana Savadatti Low Energy Residential Design– Cost Effective Approach, Mira Mesa, San Diego Today’s average building consumes more energy than needed, generating a large amount of waste and negatively impacting the environment. Excessive energy consumption by these buildings leads to the burning of fossil fuels and the depletion of natural energy resources. The study aims to reduce the negative impact on the environment by developing a thoughtful and cost-effective residential design that is adaptable to the regional and natural environment. This study will explore techniques to reduce energy consumption by making effective use of clean, renewable, and recycled energy resources. These design techniques would be customized for the regional climatic conditions of San Diego.

World Renowned Architects Exchange Unique “Napkin Sketches” with NewSchool of Architecture & Design Students. For the sixth year in a row, the original sketches from well-known architects from around the world will be available for a public auction on May 19. All proceeds benefit the San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students.

NewSchool of Architecture & Design is pleased to announce that its students, in collaboration with the local San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), have exchanged unique “napkin sketches” with renowned architects from around the world, as part of a fundraising event to benefit AIAS. In this time-honored tradition, architects and designers use napkin sketches not only for self-reflection and self-thought, but also as a way to communicate spur of the moment inspiration. In its sixth year, this annual event and auction is free and open to the public and will take place on Friday, May 19, at 6 p.m. at Park Boulevard Catering, located across the street from NewSchool’s campus, at 734 Park Boulevard in San Diego.

Students and attendees are given the opportunity to bid, through a live auction, on original concepts designed exclusively for the event by well-renowned architects from the U.S. and around the globe. This year includes submissions from prominent architects such as: Billie Tsien, Larry Scarpa, Ian Ritchie, Glen Murcutt, Perry Kulper, Snohetta, Alvaro Siza, Norman Kelly, Chora, Alan Rosenblum, Richard Meier, Coop Himmelblau, Ban Van Berkel, Greg Lynn, Steven Holl and Chris Livingston.

NewSchool’s event began as a “sketch for a sketch” project where students crafted their own napkin sketches to capture the attention of well-known architects. These creations are then mailed to architects from around the world with a request for an original sketch that can be auctioned off during the event. This year students have received napkin sketches from more than 25 prominent architects. It’s a reminder that in an age of computer aided design, these individuals still value the art of thinking visually and drawing by hand.

Marvin J. Malecha, President of NewSchool of Architecture & Design, will also provide various sketches to be auctioned off. Throughout his illustrious career, Marvin has maintained an active involvement with architectural practice and has received numerous accolades and awards in the fields of architecture and design. Marvin was also elected as the first president/president elect (2008-2009) of the American Institute of Architects and served as the professional association’s National President in 2009.

“The practice of napkin sketching is something architects and designers have long turned to, to map out their initial visions with the goal of ultimately designing a lasting work of art,” said Marvin J. Malecha, President, NewSchool. “The dichotomy of a ‘throw away’ napkin and permanent, structured artwork adds to the specialness of the piece. Sharing this long held practice with the students is unique and inspiring. I’m delighted to include some of my napkin sketches in this year’s auction and to see the excitement students have in drafting their own designs and sharing with architects from around the world.”

WHO: NewSchool students exchange ‘napkin sketches’ with renowned architects as part of the Sixth Annual Napkin Sketch Auction, benefiting the American Institute of Architecture Students.

WHAT: This free event is open to the public and will include both a silent and live auction of original work sketched on napkins by renowned architects.

WHEN: Friday, May 19, 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Park Boulevard Catering, 734 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101

COST: FREE

NewSchool Teams Up with the City of Portland & Mackenzie to Revitalize an Urban Neighborhood

NewSchool, located in San Diego’s East Village design district, teamed up with the City of Portland, integrated design firm Mackenzie Inc., and real estate company Intrinsic Ventures, to revitalize a rapidly growing neighborhood in the Central Eastside industrial district of Portland, Oregon. This week, under the direction of NewSchool faculty member, Daniela Deutsch, more than 60 undergraduate architecture students shared their work over the last several months collaborating with a variety of industry partners to create a vision for the development of a new, sustainable neighborhood with progressive urban engagement in the Ford District, at an event held at the Center for Architecture.

As part of NewSchool’s Integrated Design Studio, this project was developed to engage students in the ongoing conversation about contemporary directions in urban design and architecture. The project also aims to disseminate the experience of the City of Portland to other regions of the West Coast and their adaptation to local climate, cultural and economic conditions.

The project also supports NewSchool’s “Here For Good” corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiative, providing students with the opportunity to give back and help improve the lives of those impacted by this revitalization. This holistic approach to learning represents the true DNA of the NewSchool community.

Our future depends on engaged and creative professionals, who want to take an active role in its shaping,” said Daniela Deutsch, Faculty of Undergraduate Architecture at NewSchool Architecture & Design. “At NewSchool, we teach our students to be aware of our collective responsibility for the natural and built environment, the protection of historic resources and the conscious handling of resources. The students’ projects, collaborative discussions, and energizing lecturers, gave real testimony of this great ambition. Ultimately, through this project, our class strived to combine traditional design guidelines with new, contemporary technologies, and planning processes to help shape a livable and workable future for generations to come. A key role hereby was given to the teamwork and collaboration of architects, engineers, ownership and specialty consultants.”
