New Degree Program in Strategic Design and Management

San Diego, CA—October 30, 2014—NewSchool of Architecture & Design is introducing its newest degree program that will help prepare students for global careers in a new era of design. The Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Design and Management was developed to meet the projected market need for design professionals who are capable of linking design with other business and leadership functions, as well as helping an organization better innovate through strategic and design thinking. The program’s unique collaboration with Domus Academy in Milan, Italy, will help ensure NewSchool students learn to apply critical design-thinking skills to meet a variety of business challenges both domestically and globally.

“Design is playing a more strategic role for industry and executives today, who expect designers to develop a vision, manage interdisciplinary teams, and play a whole new range of connective and inspiring roles within the organization,” said Elena Pacenti, Director of Domus Academy School of Design at NewSchool. “The NewSchool Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Design and Management prepares students for these types of real-world situations.”

According to Pacenti, professionals entering the market or expanding their career opportunities must not only have a range of design skills but also be able to harness more management-savvy topics — such as business strategy and market research — which will ultimately help identify the next generation of products and services. The Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Design and Management will teach students how to use design as a strategic asset for industry and social innovation challenges.

The program starts with building a foundation in practical design thinking and working, and emphasizes the role of design as an incubator for innovation. Through courses in user and market research, manufacturing, sustainability, co-creation, branding, and innovative business modeling, students learn about the interdisciplinary ecosystem surrounding design and how to think and present on product, service, experience, and market strategy. Enrollees in NewSchool’s Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Design and Management, who will work closely with international design faculty and other experts in the Domus Academy School of Design at NewSchool, will also have the opportunity to study abroad in the world design center of Milan, Italy, at no additional tuition cost.

Throughout the program, students will learn the skills necessary to launch careers as design strategists, design researchers, and project managers within a design department or agency. They will also be equipped with the necessary knowledge to realize an entrepreneurial design role, learning to develop comprehensive strategies for bringing new products and services to life and identifying opportunities and unmet needs in the global marketplace.

The program benefits a broad range of students, from those in high school interested in careers that combine design knowledge with business skills, to practicing designers who want to take on a larger leadership role with design projects and teams. Program enrollment is open now for classes beginning in October 2015. Visit https://newschoolarch.edu/request-info/ to start the registration process or call 1-800-490-7081 to learn more.
