Graduate Admissions

NewSchool offers several Graduate degrees in the fields of Architecture and Construction Management. Our Enrollment Specialists can walk you through the process of applying. If you are an international student, you should also review our international admissions page.

Students interested in applying for our graduate degree programs should complete the general application requirements listed on our How to Apply page, as well as the specific requirements for graduate students and their program of interest. Please find the program that you are interested in applying to and review the specific requirements for graduate students.

Requirements for All Graduate Students:

  • Complete the general application process outlined on the How to Apply page.
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. See program specific requirements for details.
  • Submit Transcripts: A minimum GPA of 2.7 during your undergraduate degree is required. If your GPA is under 2.7, please speak with your Enrollment Specialist to discuss appeals options.
  • GRE or GMAT test scores are recommended but not required.
  • Many of our architecture graduate programs are required to submit a portfolio. Visit our portfolio requirements page. Programs not required to submit a portfolio include: M. Arch (4+3), Master of Science in Architecture and Master of Construction Management.

Program Specific Requirements:

Master of Architecture (4+3):

  • Undergraduate degree in any field is required
  • Proof of completion of prerequisite courses or their equivalent. For a full list, visit the Master of Architecture 4+3 Prerequisite page.
  • Submission of a portfolio of creative works is strongly recommended.

Master of Architecture (4+2):

  • Undergraduate degree must be in architecture or a related field.
  • Proof of completion of prerequisite courses or their equivalent. For a full list, visit the Master of Architecture 4+2 Prerequisite page.
  • A portfolio of prior architectural/design work is required.

Master of Architectural Studies (5+1):

  • Undergraduate degree must be in a NAAB accredited architecture program.
  • A portfolio of prior architectural/design work is required.

Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) Tracks:

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 is required, however, a GPA of 3.0 is expected of students applying to the IPAL track of the Master of Architecture 4+2 or 4+3.
  • Required for the IPAL track of the Master of Architecture 4+2 or 4+3, at least two letters of recommendation attesting to the candidate’s character, work ethic, and professionalism, preferably from former/current employers, professors or supervisors.
  • A portfolio of prior architectural/design work is required.
  • For IPAL 4+2 candidates (candidates seeking advanced placement in the IPAL program), there are additional requirements for the portfolio. The format of the portfolio is similar to the portfolio format for graduate applicants. However, the portfolio for the IPAL 4+2 applicant must specifically include, progression of maturity in design projects, manifesting appreciation of the design process, technical skills, constructability and representational techniques.
  • A professional portfolio is required for those who have already established AXP (Internship) status with the NCARB, information on the fulfillment of the number of hours per NCARB categories of AXP must be included.

Master of Construction Management:

  • A resume or CV listing educational and professional experience is required.
