Courses will demonstrate adherence to NewSchool’s Core Academic Competencies and overall program outcomes.

  • Quantitative Literacy: Students take two math courses, including Geometry.
  • Critical Thinking: Courses that emphasize critical thinking include Media Communication, Cultural Studies, Introduction to Philosophy, Survey of Entertainment Media, and the integrative Exhibit Design Studios as well as the senior Portfolio Development Course.
  • Research and Synthesis of Information: Several courses require research and interpretation of data. Advanced English Composition introduces research skills, and these skills continue through courses such as Exhibit Design Studio and Portfolio Development.
  • Communication: Courses that focus on communication include English Composition, Advanced English Composition Speech, and Media Communication as well as a Communication Elective.
  • Discipline-Specific Competencies: Each core and discipline-based course will be grounded in one or multiple personal competencies. Students will understand the interrelationships between each.
  • Foundational Knowledge: These courses build the foundational knowledge base of the design-minded student. Coursework includes the historical and theoretical underpinnings that have shaped the design industries. Students are also introduced to computer software as tools to carry out their assignments.
  • Visual Thinking and Representation: Courses in this competency provide students with the ability to translate their ideas from concept into cogent design solutions. Ideation and hands-on iterative design projects help students to develop process-driven methodologies.
  • Applied Technologies: Students master technology skills through a series of technology-based courses. Specific industry-related software, hardware, and equipment are used throughout the courses. See the course listings under each concentration for a complete description.
  • Cultural and Global Relevancy: Students are exposed to and explore the idea of design as a tool for change. Their creative works serve not only to comment on, but to address an array of cultural, social, local, and global issues of the day.
  • Professional Practice: Students are immersed in the economic, pragmatic, ethical, and professional practices that are common in the creative workplace. They gain a powerful insight into real-world scenarios and build on their ability to make informed, profitable, and ethical business decisions.
